Job Description for President

The President is responsible for the overall management, planning and leadership of the Episcopal Church Building Fund.  The President reports directly to the Chair of the Fund’s Board of Trustees.

The President works with the Trustees and their Committees to establish the strategic direction of the organization and to develop effective policies and programs to support the Building Fund’s mission of “helping build the church and helping the church to build”.   The President works with the Vice President and staff to administer all such programs and to implement the agreed upon strategies.  The President supports and partners with the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society (DFMS) to help achieve our common goals.  The President explains the Fund’s purpose and programs to Episcopal congregations, outside organizations and to the public.  The President develops standards and procedures related to human resources, budget and physical facilities, and the President has overall responsibility for staff management and development.  The President is responsible for fulfilling all the duties of this position as outlined in the Episcopal Church Building Fund by-laws. Loans up to $350,000 are available to a dioceses for a congregation in the Episcopal Church. Loans up to$100,000 are available to dioceses of the Anglican Communion.

Responsibilities:

“Helping build the church…”

Congregational Development:  The President works with DFMS, dioceses, and individual congregations to help build the church by promoting congregational growth and vitality in Episcopal congregations.  The President: 

• Partners with DFMS whenever possible to provide congregational development services and programs to help build the Episcopal Church.
• Works with dioceses and directly with congregations to ensure congregational vitality.
• Develops and delivers training events like Start Up! Start Over! for congregations wanting to grow.
• Provides workshops and consultations.
• Works to develop new resources to help congregations wishing to grow.

New Initiatives: The President works to put into action:

• Brokering of unused Diocesan Loan Funds
• Fundraising to grow the assets of the Building Fund
• Partnering with DFMS on mission funding

Management of Loan ProgramThe President works with the Trustees on the Loan Committee to make loans to healthy, viable, Episcopal congregations.  The President:

• Encourages loan applications.
• Assesses the vitality of applying congregations.
• Works with applicants to encourage congruence between their proposed building, the congregation, the ministry, and the reality of their budget.
• Reviews loan applications and makes recommendations to the Loan Committee concerning their merits.

Resource Development:  The President works to:

• Develop new video resources.
• Develop new written resources such as “Builder.”
• Explore the use of other media resources.

Communications and Outreach

Communication with Congregations and Community Outreach:  The President explains the organization’s purpose and programs to Episcopal congregations, outside organizations and to the public:

• Educates congregations regarding the services of the Building Fund and how those services might apply to each Diocese and congregation.
• Oversees all publications assuring consistency, accuracy and professionalism.

Operational Leadership

Operational Leadership:  The President works with the Board to develop and update the strategic plan of the Fund on a regular basis, making sure the Fund’s specific goals support its overall mission and vision.  The President ensures that the strategic plan is implemented effectively:

• Identifies need for fundamental changes to the Fund and brings such matters to the Board for action.

      • Develops:

      • Effective organization structures and skills needed to execute identified responsibilities
      • Effective financial administration policies and actions

      • Develops and maintains strong relations between the Fund and the staff of DFMS and the Presiding Bishop.

      Financial Oversight:  The President oversees the financial activities of the Fund on a day-to-day basis including:

      • Oversight of endowments
      • Performance of the Building Fund’s assets
      • Ensurance that regular performance monitoring occurs

      Staff Development:  The President is responsible for the effective hiring, development, management, retention and termination of all personnel.  The President:

      • Delegates work effectively to build appropriate skills in other staff members.
      • Counsels staff members on performance, career growth opportunities, and other issues effectively and promptly.  Ensures annual performance reviews are conducted.
      • Maximizes the potential of all staff members and sets high quality performance standards. 
      • Establishes a positive atmosphere in which high quality programs and services are delivered. 
      • Assumes responsibility for all hiring and terminations.

      Board of Trustee Relationship: The President is responsible for building effective relationships with Board members and working with the Chair to ensure that the Board adds value appropriately to the achievement of the Building Fund’s goals and objectives:

      • Helps identify new Board candidates to be considered for addition to the Board and assists in other Board development activities including obtaining the commitment of new Trustees, training, and ensuring effective communication between staff and Trustees.
      President is a Trustee and attends meetings regularly and keeps up-to-date on progress and issues of each Committee.  Assists the chairs of each Committee in establishing appropriate objectives for that Committee.
      Assists the Chair and Vice Chair of the Board in planning and conducting Board meetings.  Attends all Board and Executive Committee meetings.
      Develops and maintains strong relations between Fund’s staff and the Trustees.

      Qualifications:

      10+ years experience in management or leadership roles
      • Commitment to the Episcopal Church Building Fund’s mission and its stewardship responsibility; practicing member of the Episcopal Church and  familiar with congregational leadership and training
      • Demonstrated experience in financial management and understanding of financial management concepts and their practical application
      • Proven personnel management experience
      • Strong organizational skills, ability to assess needs, and multi-task
      • Ability to recognize change and manage a growing organization
      • Excellent and effective written and verbal communication skills
      • Ability to work collaboratively with a board of directors
      • Experience with non-profit organizations either as staff member or as an involved board member
      • Personal qualities including ability to build relationships, integrity, creativity, innovation, enthusiasm, and ability to motivate and listen to others
      • Willingness to travel extensively including weekends
      • Congregational development work with Episcopal congregations preferred
      • Bachelor’s degree; graduate work a plus
      • Willingness to reside in New York area
